| Kootenai Land Swap | |
Almost all of the climbing in Kootenai sits on an 88-acre parcel which is privately owned. There is a current "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding climbing on this land. This land needs to get into the public domain through a land trust effort or land swap. Efforts are ongoing, but you can always help by encouraging the Bitterroot Land Trust, Five Valleys Land Trust, and the Forest Service (particularly the Stevensville Forest Service Station) to get involved. | Lost Horse Canyon | |
Currently, mining in the old Lost Horse quarry has stopped for the season, however, the FS has stated it has plans to continue mining the quarry in the future for all their road and rip-rap needs. The Ravalli County Road Department would like to join in on this, removing rock for their roads as well. Currently, the BCC is working hard to prevent this from happening, but we need everyones help! You can always contact the Ravalli County Commissioners and tell them that you do not want the Road Department mining Lost Horse when commercial options are available. You can do the same for the FS. The BCC is working hard to get a toilet in Lost Horse through RAC funding and FS cooperation. A toilet will continue to emphasize that this canyon is a high-use recreation area not compatible with industrial mining operations. |
